What makes you a Girl Warrior?

I lead with kindness first. Everything follows that – the way I lead, the way I teach, the way I write, the way I navigate this world. There is strength in kindness. It’s a Girl Warrior’s secret weapon.

What’s the biggest decision you ever made?

Moving to Victoria thirty years ago with two kids and three cats, no money, no job, no prospects, no home. Just this ‘field of dreams’ belief that if I moved here, all that stuff would come.

What have been the biggest challenges or obstacles that you’ve overcome – personally and/or professionally?

Personally – thriving and creating a better life after my first husband and I divorced.
Professionally – getting into the Advertising business with absolutely no experience, just a quiet faith that I could do it if I got my foot in the door.

What’s the most important life lesson your Mom taught you?

To be kind and compassionate and to listen, not only with your ears but with your heart.

What would you say to your younger Girl Warrior?

Learn to trust in the process of life. Relax, it will be fine. Not necessarily as you thought it would be – good, bad or otherwise. But it will fine. You will be fine. And stop making up catastrophic stories that keep you up at night. Most of that shit isn’t true. So trust in yourself and the universe. You’ll be fine.

What would you say to future Girl Warriors looking for inspiration?

Trust that you will always be okay – no matter what. And everything is a teachable moment so listen up and learn. Keep trying things. Repeat.

Who is/are your Girl Warrior hero(s) and why?

All the exquisite women in my life – past and present. I’ve learned from all of them. They know who they are.

Blue Sky it. No boundaries here, just limitless opportunities. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Alive and well. My family and friends and animals are all well and happy. Girl Warrior Productions is a massive success. I’ve published an international best selling book. I’ve met Brene Brown.

What makes you laugh uncontrollably? Cry out all the tears?

Spontaneous, witty, naturally funny people make me laugh. I’m related to many of them. Everything makes me cry these days. Everything touches my heart profoundly. It’s full of cracks and broken shards. I weep for the earth. I weep for humanity.

What books are on your nightstand?

A lamp, the book Taste, My Life Through Food by Stanley Tucci, a pen, my diary, reading glasses, water, Ombra SOS Hand Care Lotion, an empty bottle of antibiotics (took the last dose this morning.)

Living or dead, who would you like to have lunch with?

My mom.

Describe yourself in five words.

Kind, curious, creative, compassionate, anxious.

If a bioflic were written about your life, what would it be called?

The girl from Nowhere Land.
